Monsoon brings copious rain

October 29, 2014 11:47 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 04:05 pm IST - CHENNAI:

A vigorous Northeast monsoon is bringing copious rain across the State, filling up dams on the Western Ghats.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the rain, beginning October 1, has been 43 per cent excess than normal rainfall. Almost all districts, except a few in the delta and north, have received excess rainfall. Only Tiruvannamalai district registered deficient rainfall this month. Meanwhile, the government has decided to assess the crop damage once the flood water recedes in the delta districts where, according to official estimates, 53,000 acres of farmland have been inundated.
