The much-expected but delayed North East monsoon remained active in Tamil Nadu with many areas receiving good rainfall.

The regional weather office forecast more rains for the next 24 hours even as Chennai and its suburbs continued to witness sharp overnight showers.

A trough of low pressure over Bay of Bengal continued to bring rains, with Ramanathapuram receiving a maximum of 11 cm, Regional Meteorological Centre Director Dr S.R. Ramanan told PTI

Heavy to very heavy rainfall was expected in coastal and interior areas of the state in the next 24 hours, he added.

The weather office forecast generally cloudy skies with a few spells of rain or thundershowers in some areas in Chennai.

The much-awaited North East monsoon, which brings the bulk of rainfall to Tamil nadu and supports the main cultivation season of Rabi, had set over South India on Friday with a trough of low pressure over Bay of Bengal.

The monsoon had arrived late by nine days, as against the normal onset of Oct 20 and is expected to stay till December.

A normal monsoon is expected with an average rainfall of 43 cm, according to the Weather office.
