No sabhas? Well, there is always television

Marghazhi season is upon us and for those katcheri enthusiasts who can't go sabha-hoping, TV comes in handy

It’s not yet Marghazhi — that season that’s so uniquely Chennai. It doesn’t seem like it’s round the corner at all, hey, where’s that nip in the air, that gentle dawn, the chilly night? But all the same, it will be upon us soon enough.

Rasikas have already started planning for the season, wondering which Sabha they should buy season passes for, what concerts they should catch and which Sabha canteen they should eat at. Others are, however, mapping out the channels they can catch concerts on. While some channels telecast concerts live, nearly every Tamil channel telecasts a range of concerts during the season.

Some even organise their own shows, and manage to get top musicians, besides a crop of very interesting young talent. For those who cannot go Sabha hopping, there is always television.

“I can't sit too long due to health reasons, but I am a great lover of the kutcheri season. If Mohammed can’t go to the mountain, then the mountain must come to Mohammed. I will be lost without the concerts being telecast on TV,” says J. Lakshmi, a housewife in T. Nagar. Others like Vidya R., an engineering student, find it convenient to catch up with their favourite singers even if they are unable to attend ‘paid’ concerts. So, there you are, get ready, go watch TV, this Marghazhi!

Promising youngsters receive awards

For those watching TV serials on channels like SAB TV, Colors, Star Plus or Zee TV, it would be another day of entertainment on this Sunday. Their favourites on screen would receive their recognition for hard work on screen or off-screen.

“While winning awards at a young age may be a delight for TV watchers, watching young talented artistes like Siddharth Nigam and Spandan Chaturvedi, showcasing their skills on small screen is another exciting aspect,” regular TV watcher and school teacher, M. Lakshmi says.

She puts her domestic work aside for quite some time to watch Siddharth Nigam, as Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat and he was chosen as ‘most promising child artiste’ in male category, while young Spandan Chaturvedi, was awarded for her sterling performance in ‘Udaan’, as ‘most promising child artiste’ in female category.

Siddharth Nigam, a national-level gold medalist gymnast, started his career with television advertisement for Bournvita in 2011 and currently he is working in historical drama show Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat as young Ashoka Samrat.

Spandan Chaturvedi started her career with the 2012 drama series Ek Veer Ki Ardaas...Veera and is currently playing the lead role of Chakor in Colors TV show Udaan, for which she won Most Stylish Nanhe Natkhat award at Television Style Awards and Desh Ki Ladli award.

Watch them receiving the prestigious awards, the programme which is to be telecasted on Colors TV at 6 p.m. on this Sunday.
