The Congress party had not done any mistake for it to regret and apologise to anyone, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president B.S. Gnanadesikan said here on Thursday.
Replying to remarks made by DMK chief M. Karunanidhi at a public meeting on Wednesday that the party would back the Congress post-poll if it “regretted” its past mistakes, Mr. Gnanadesikan said it was not clear as to what Mr. Karunanidhi was referring to.
For nine years, the DMK was part of the UPA government at the Centre. In the first term, they were allotted seven important ministries. But the party had made it a habit of leaving the alliance before elections. “When they were with the BJP too, they left before elections,” he told reporters here.
On Mr. Karunanidhi’s charge that the Congress being “ungrateful” was the reason for its current precarious situation in many States, Mr. Gnanadesikan wondered why the DMK did not level such charges before leaving the coalition.
“If it was 2G issue that Mr. Karunanidhi is pointing to, I want to make it clear that the case is directly monitored by the Supreme Court and the Centre has no role in the case,” he observed.
Terming “absurd” the DMK chief’s comment that his party would back the Congress again if it adhered to secular principles, he said the whole nation was aware that the Congress was the secular force in the country fighting the communal politics of the BJP.
“This election is a fight between secularism and communalism,” he pointed out and added that the results of the election would show the world that the Congress was not in the ditch as claimed by a few.
