No need for cargo port in Colachel, says MMK

Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirullah on Saturday urged the Centre not to build an international cargo port at Colachel in Kanniyakumari district as it would affect the livelihood of fishermen in the area.

“It has been announced that sand will be spread around 390 hectares for the construction. It has also been proposed that a structure will be erected at 6.5 km into the sea to stop the waves,” Mr. Jawahirullah said.

Stating that Colachel is one of the most important spots for fishing, he said there is no need for a port in the area.

‘Might affect livelihood’

“Except for IRE, no other company has been allowed to set shop here. Most people living in this part of the country depend on agriculture and products obtained from the sea for their livelihood. If landmass is filled with sand, the livelihood of fishermen, who usually go 5 to 10 km into the sea for their catch, will be affected,” he said.
