Deliveries through Caesarean section have been temporarily stopped at the Government Sait Memorial Hospital here, according to Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar.

After visiting the hospital on Wednesday, the Minister said the procedure would resume as soon as the situation stabilised. “Till then such cases will be referred to Coimbatore,” he said. Five women who were being treated at the hospital died in the past few days due to post-delivery complications.

Stating that facilities in the Government Sait Memorial Maternity Hospital would be upgraded, Dr. Vijayabaskar said that an Intensive Care Unit with a lift facility would be set up at a cost of Rs. 45 lakh.

Additional ventilators for adults and babies would be provided.

Pointing out that there were now three gynaecologists, he said that two more would be appointed.

In order to motivate doctors to serve in places such as The Nilgiris, one mark is being added for every year of service to their performance in postgraduate courses.

The Minister also said that health workers for the implementation of the Sputum Collection and Transport Scheme of The Nilgiris District TB Centre would be appointed by the government.

With irregularities having allegedly taken place in the appointment of workers, the Deputy Director of the Centre P.J. Vasanthan was placed under suspension recently.
