The Neyveli Lignite Corporation will establish a science museum to foster creativity in children, according to NLC chairman and managing director B. Surender Mohan.

Such a museum would not only provide children space to give vent to their ideas but also to showcase their working models.

The NLC chief made the announcement of sanctioning a science museum at the recently held National Science Day celebrations hosted by the Neyveli Chapter of Tamil Nadu Science Forum at Lignite Hall in NLC.

Mr. Mohan, who was the chief guest at the celebrations organised to commemorate the Nobel-winning discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman, noted that children had a key role to tackle the pollution problem which had emerged as the biggest global threat.

The issue of pollution could be confronted only through a scientific approach. Science as approach and sustainable development as a mission can help tackle most existing problems and students were the right agents to carry this forward, he said.

S. Sridhar General Manager (Public Relations) at NLC, who presided, noted that Neyveli which hardly witnessed two or three of its students make it to the IIT’s until a decade ago had now got a spot on the map of prestigious Science & Technology institutions.

Since 2007, 230 students out of 297 from JHSS Block-5 had got admission in the IIT’s /NIT’s. For the academic year 2013-14, 38 out of 59 students, or two out of three students got IIT admission, which was highest ratio among any school of Tamil Nadu, he said.

The NLC has been playing its role in this by organising intensive coaching sessions for IIT aspirants, it was pointed out.

K. Viswanathan, joint secretary, TNSF, said that though ancient India taught much of science and technology to the world it was now adopting knowledge from the rest of the world.

Swarna Kumari Surender Mohan, the president of Neyveli Ladies Club and Sneha Opportunity Services Society received the first copy of a book containing Science songs released by the NLC chief.

Earlier, students from various schools enthusiastically presented their exhibit models on various science issues at a public exhibition.

Prizes and certificates were presented to the winners of the competitions conducted in connection with National Science Day. School children also staged cultural programmes.
