Apart from catering to its own lignite requirements and that of the private industries in Tamil Nadu, the Neyveli Lignite Corporation is all set to penetrate the lignite markets in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, according to B.Surender Mohan, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the NLC.

The NLC has set an ambitious target of increasing the lignite production from the last year’s volume of 7.64 akh tonnes to 12 lakh tonnes for the current financial year (2013-2014).

As such it has to find new markets for lignite and the cement industries in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are the potential targets. The information was shared by the Chairman with the representatives of the private industries at the fourth Regional Coal Consumers’ Council (RCCC) meeting held in Neyveli.

As of now the NLC is supplying lignite to the extent of 19 lakh tonnes a year to a private power producer in Neyveli as per the fuel supply agreement entered with the company.

Besides this, the NLC has its regular consumer base in cement, chemical, brick, paper, steel and sugar industries, all in Tamil Nadu. “It is for the first time that the NLC is eyeing the lignite markets in the neighbouring States. ” Mr Mohan said.
