Nithyananda asked to approach police

Controversial godman Nithyananda was directed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday to make a fresh representation to the police for protection to enter Madurai Adheenam.

The founder of Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam had filed a criminal original petition before the Madurai Bench on Wednesday seeking police protection to enter the adheenam along with his disciples.

In his petition, he had claimed that he was appointed as the 293rd Guru Mahasannidhanam, following all custom and rituals. The public notice issued by the incumbent revoking his appointment was in “violation of legal principles,” he had stated.

Hearing the petition, Justice M.V. Muralidharan observed that only when a representation was made for protection, could the police consider whether it was made in accordance with law.
