Nine persons including six members of a family were washed away in flash floods following incessant rains at Visoor near Panruti in the district on Monday. The death toll in rain related incidents in Cuddalore has increased to 13.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel retrieved the bodies and sent it for post-mortem to Cuddalore Government Hospital. According to sources, Selvi, wife of Veeramani from Arunthatiyar colony in Visoor was sleeping in her thatched hut with her children Siva, Veeramuthu, Bhavani, Marimuthu and Dinesh when they were washed away in flash floods.
Pichaimmal, Perumal and Natesan who were staying in an adjacent hut were also washed away. Official sources said the thatched huts were located in the middle of two rivulets. The gushing waters suddenly rose and washed away the two huts.
In another incident, Bhoomika (10), daughter of Manickavel was also washed away in flash floods at Koranapattu in the district. Sources said Bhoomika along with her parents hailing from Pillayarkuppam was visiting her grandmother's house when she was washed away. Manickavel and locals tried to save Bhoomika in vain.
