Nine TN fishermen held by Sri Lankan Navy

Nine fishermen from Nagapattinam were apprehended by the Srilankan Navy off Srilankan coast on Tuesday night.

The fishermen from Akkarapettai fishing habitation had ventured out fishing on June 17, and were apprehended on Tuesday night at around 10 p.m. According to official sources, the arrest was suspected to have been made near Srilankan coast for breach of the IMBL. The fishermen have been detained at Kangesanthurai, the official said.

Following the news of the arrest, Akkarapettai fishing habitation has proposed fishing boycott, until the fishermen are released. Speaking to The Hindu, Akkaraipettai panchayatar G.Thiruvaraiselvam said that the habitation has announced a strike, starting Wednesday afternoon, till the release of the detained fishermen and their boat.
