Two Sri Lankan fishing vessels with nine crew were apprehended in a midnight swoop on Wednesday off the Chennai coast by the Indian Coast Guard, Eastern Region.

A press note from the Coast Guard said the ICG Dornier had detected these boats positioned in Indian waters approximately 38 nautical miles off Chennai during a night surveillance and immediately tipped off the Coast Guard Ship Rajkamal.

The Sri Lankan vessels Mangla-2 and Mangla-3 were brought to Chennai and handed over to local police on Thursday.

The Eastern Region of Coast Guard has so far apprehended 59 Sri Lankan fishing boats and 308 crew for Exclusive Economic Zone treaty violations, the press note said.
