9 stranded fishermen rescued

Nine fishermen of Nagore, who were stranded in mid-sea after their boat developed a snag were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard, on Saturday.

The Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation after receiving a distress message about the drifting boat. Indian Coast Guard Ship C-415 was diverted for the search operation and it located the stranded boat around 11.45 a.m. off Karaikal coast and the boat was taken under tow.

The fishermen — S. Arunachalam, S. Govindaraj, S. Gopi, S. Vetri, K. Dhakshinamurthy, V. Prasad, S. Jothi, E. Rathinasamy and T. Rahul — all from Nagore, were safely rescued and brought ashore and handed over to Fisheries Department officials at Karaikal port in the evening.

Four fishermen of Kottaipattinam, who were stranded in mid-sea after a hole formed in their country boat, were rescued by Coastal Security Group personnel on Friday. The fishermen — Syed Ali Aburdagir (26), Abbas (32), Ponnaiah (45) and Balu (40) — had ventured into sea on Thursday night and were scheduled to return home on Saturday morning.

They alerted Coastal police station at Tiruppunavasal.
