Director-General of Police P. Kamaraj on Thursday said that services of National Investigation Agency (NIA) would be sought to probe the pipe bomb case.

The bomb, which, according to the police, was “a powerful explosive,” was found under a car of Union Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanasamy’s residence on Ellaiammankoil Street on Thursday. The defused bomb, which was 30 cm in length and 10 cm in diameter, is in the custody of Crime Branch CID, which is investigating the case at present. .

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Kamaraj said that if there was a need, the services of Central security agencies, including National Investigation Agency, would be utilised. Informal communication had already sent to a few Central agencies and available inputs in the case shared with them.

The seized bomb was powerful but not RDX, Mr. Kamaraj said. The DGP also said that he couldn’t share any more information on investigation at this juncture as the probe was in initial stage. Police had not got any clue so far. Asked whether it was a handiwork of extremists or anti-social elements, Mr. Kamaraj said four teams had been formed to investigate the case from all angles.

Meanwhile, police have beefed up security in various places. Barricades have been set up on Ellaiammankoil Street as a precautionary measure.
