The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is all set to make government agencies accountable for the quality of drinking water supplied by them.

Taking up a public spirited person’s letter as suo motu, the tribunal issued notice to the State agencies to file replies. It was already conducting a hearing on a suo motu matter related to illegal packaged drinking water units based on a report published in The Hindu. Ram Chandra Srivastava in his letter urged the NGT to take into consideration the quality of water supplied by government bodies such as Chennai Metro Water and other local bodies in the State.

Mr. Srivastava said: “The packaged water units take care of only 10 per cent of the water needs of the State whereas 90 per cent of the water needs are met by government sources. It should be made mandatory that even government sources should get food license and maintain prescribed quality of bottled drinking water.”

He requested the tribunal to make sure that the drinking water supplied by government met the quality of the bottled water.
