Newly married couple escape ‘honour killing’

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

A newly married couple narrowly escaped possible “honour killing” near here on Saturday evening.

Police said S. Arumuga Karthik (25) of Ambasamudram eloped with a 20-year-old girl from a dominant community to Chennai on February 11, and married her. When they came to Ambasamudram police station on Saturday seeking protection, the police allowed them to lead a married life. Even as they left Ambasamudram in a car, the girl’s father and his relatives started chasing them in a sports utility vehicle and a few bikes.

When they reached Gangaikondan check-post, the couple sought police protection and narrated their plight to the police.

On seeing them with the police, those chasing them tried to escape.

The police managed to nab two persons – Murugan (27) and advocate Kannan (31) of Sattupathu near Ambasamudram. The two reportedly told the police that they were trying to murder the girl and Karthik, a youth from another community.

The hunt is on to nab 11 others.
