V. Murugesan has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University.

Mr. Murugesan, who has served Anna University in various capacities for 34 years, is known for bringing in far-reaching changes in research activities as the Director of Centre for Research.

“The centre became a role model for the entire country as I put in place a system for admission of research scholars and synopsis submission. I made it mandatory for each researcher to publish in a journal, the fruits of which Anna University is still reaping,” Mr. Murugesan said.

He has 220 research publications to his credit and over a dozen of his works are in collaboration with researchers in South East Asian countries, Canada and Europe.

He was among the 10 scientists selected by Thomson Reuters India citation award in 2012.

The International Advanced Porous Materials journal released a special volume to commemorate his 65th birthday. The only other professor to receive this honour is Prof. C.N.R. Rao.

After retiring from Anna University he served as registrar of Crescent University for five years.

He has been been a visiting professor in Japan on invitation of the Japan Society for Promotion of Science and Technology.

His focus at the university would be to improve the ranking of the institution in the National Institutional Ranking Framework.

Since the university has a good pharmacology department he wants to improve its capabilities, he said.

“I want to improve the communication and technical skills of the students and motivate teachers to take up research,” he said. He also wants to improve the community’s health.
