Development works are all on track in Perambalur district and preliminary works have been started for establishing a special economic zone (SEZ) in the district, said D. Napoleon, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, here on Tuesday.
The Minister who is also the chairman of the vigilance and monitoring committee for the three districts of Perambalur, Tiruchi and Karur chaired the Perambalur district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting. He said that efforts were are being taken to build a huge storage facility for onions produced in the district. This will help the farmers, who have thus far been storing the produce in their homes.
Mr. Napoleon said that the foundation stone for a Government medical college would be laid in February next year. He said that nearly 80 per cent of the road works taken up under the Prime Minister’s Sadak Yojana Scheme were completed.
The Minister said that Rs.42 crore was sanctioned by the Centre for the current year (2009-10) for implementing several development works in the district against Rs.40 crore received last year. Separate toilets for girls and boys will be built in all the schools, he said.
Mr. Napoleon discussed with the Collector M.Vijayakumar, MLA Rajkumar, District Revenue Officer S. Palanisamy, chairmen of panchayat unions and presidents of panchayats about the progress of various Centrally-sponsored development schemes being implemented in the district.
