Jayalalithaa slams Opposition for faulting her for the freebies

: Staunchly defending her promise of freebies for the poor, AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced that the second Pudhu Vaazhvu project, a poverty eradication and empowerment programme implemented in about 4,000 villages, will get rolling in a few months.

At an election rally here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said that the Pudhu Vaazhvu project which was launched with World Bank assistance in 2005 was coming to an end in the next few months.

Steps have been taken to launch the Rs. 900 crore Second Pudhu Vaazvhu project.

“The World Bank is expected to give the nod in the next few months, ” she assured.

Defending her pro-poor policies, she said, “Other parties are correct in saying that we have promised some freebies for the poor people in our election manifesto. It is true. Our government is always with the poor. That is why our promises target the poor,” she said,
