The Mariyur-Valinokkam salt complex of the Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation (TNSC), a State-owned enterprise, has established a plant to make three varieties of Amma Salt, launched by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on June 11.

The plant, established with an investment of about Rs. 50 lakh, is being operated with a capacity to produce about 250 tonnes of the three varieties a day. It provides additional employment opportunities to 250 people, mostly women from nearby villages.

Thanks to the active support of TNSC managing director C. Kamaraj, the plant and a new pumping station were established in a short span of time at a total investment of Rs. 5.50 crore, P. Selvaraj, Project Manager (in-charge), told reporters on Friday.

“We proposed to step up the plant’s capacity and automate the packing process,” he said. At present, the packing of the salt was done manually in one kg pack and a master pack of 25 kg.

Dealers appointed

The plant produced Refined Free Flow Iodised Salt, Double Fortified Salt and Low Sodium Salt. The TNSC has priced the three varieties at Rs. 6, Rs. 10 and Rs. 17 a kg., and they were sold in the open market at Rs. 10, Rs. 14 and Rs. 21 respectively, V. Balasubramanian, deputy manager (Sales) said. The corporation has appointed dealers in all districts to ensure the salt reached the weaker sections.
