Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday ordered the sanction of Rs. one lakh to the family of a 16-year-old boy who was injured in a shooting incident at the Neelankarai police station a week ago. The Chief Minister also said the government would bear the full cost of his medical treatment.

In a statement, the Chief Minister stated that the amount had been sanctioned considering the poor economic condition of the boy's family. The boy, son of Mohammed Hanifa of Vettuvankeni, was shot at when he was being interrogated at the Neelankarai police station and the station inspector, R. Pushparaj’s revolver went off "inadvertently."

Expressing sadness over the incident, Ms Jayalalithaa said she had instructed the hospital where the boy had been admitted, to provide the best treatment and wished the boy a speedy recovery.

Inspector R. Pushparaj has been placed under suspension following the incident.
