Need for creating awareness on heritage

As part of National World Heritage week celebrations held to commemorate Indira Gandhi's birthday, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has organised a photo exhibition on monuments in Chennai circle at the Big Temple at Thanjavur.

Jayakumar, a professor of Tamil University inaugurated the exhibition on Friday. G.Saravanan, Senior Conservator ASI and P.Mohan, Assistant Superintndent of archaeology, ASI were present on the occasion.

Photographs of the Big temple, Gangaikondacholapuram temple, Darasuram temple, Siva temple at Nankupatti, Pudukottai, Vishnu temple at Erukkampatti are on display at the exhibition.

“The main aim of the exhibition is to create awareness among people about our rich heritage and the need to protect them,” said Mr.Saravanan.

Twenty post graduate students of the Tamil University are also engaged in getting the views of people on the monuments. They distributed questionnaires to people and got back their feedback. “This is to assess the conservation work taken up by ASI and to improve it ,” he added.
