National conference

The Department of English of The Madura College conducted a national conference on ‘Literary theory’ recently, with the objective of sensitising teachers and academics to various aspects of literary theory. Expert lectures were delivered by Christel R. Devadawson, Professor, Department of English, University of Delhi; B. Hariharan, Professor, Institute of English, University of Kerala; Babitha Justin, Associate Professor, Humanities, IIST, Thiruvananthapuram; Jibu Mathew George of Department of Indian and World Literatures, School of Literary Studies. EFLU, Hyderabad, and Ratan T. Mohunta, Head, Department of English, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore.

There was a panel discussion on ‘The relevance of theory in everyday classroom scenario’ chaired by Dr. Hariharan. Eminent academicians and heads of departments from all over Tamil Nadu participated in the panel discussion. There were four parallel sessions in which research papers were presented on literary theory by participants from all over India.

R. Subramony, Head (in-charge), Department of English, welcomed the participants. S. Natanagopal, secretary, The Madura College Board; D. Ramasubramanian, president, and R. Murali, Principal, offered felicitations. Subulakshmi Sundaram delivered the valedictory address. R. Raja proposed a vote of thanks.

Graduation day

The 11th Graduation Day of Pandian Saraswathi Yadav Engineering College, Arasanoor, was held on April 12.

S.R. Swaminathan, Senior Director, Virtusa Consulting Services, in his Graduation Day address, stressed the importance of leadership qualities among engineering graduates. He advised the students to develop soft skills and not to hesitate to speak wherever necessary. The chief guest distributed degree certificates and awards to 304 engineering graduates. The management prizes were distributed to university rank holders.

College chairman S. Pandian presided over the function. SP. Varadharajan, Managing Director, addressed the graduates. V. Dharmalingam, Principal, welcomed the gathering. A meeting of the alumni association followed the Graduation Day.

International meet

The departments of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Computer Science of Madurai Institute of Engineering and Technology, Pottapalayam, conducted an international conference on ‘Applied engineering, science and technology’ on April 13. Mohammed Hussein of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Malaysia University, delivered a lecture on ‘Acoustics and shape of materials,’ while M. Duraiselvam, Associate Professor, NIT, Tiruchi, spoke on the latest trends in laser and its applications.

More than 300 papers were submitted by students, teachers and scholars from Singapore, Malaysia and Indian universities. Among them, 61 were selected and 41 papers presented at the conference.

Meet on materials

The Department of Chemistry of Kalasalingam University, Krishnankovil, organised a national conference on ‘Advanced functional materials and applications’ recently. It was inaugurated by Vijayamohanan K. Pillai, Director, Central Electro Chemical Research Institute, Karaikudi.

In his inaugural address, the Director explained the development of different types of materials. Chancellor K. Sridharan presided over the inaugural session. The Vice-Chancellor, S. Saravana Sankar, and Registrar V. Vasudevan offered facilitations. Manogar, Head, Department of Chemistry, welcomed the participants. Thillai Arasu proposed a vote of thanks.

A total of 235 research papers were submitted by scholars and students from all over India.

Yoga courses

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Sri S. Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College, Sattur, and the World Community Service Centre, Aliyar, on April 15 for conducting certificate and diploma courses in yoga for students from the next academic year. V. Premkumar, Principal, and K. Perumal, Director, Education Wing, WCSC, inked the MoU on behalf of their institutions. Raja Sudalaimuthu, zonal president of WCSC and professors of the college, were present on the occasion.

Candle-lighting ceremony

Rev. Jacob Memorial Christian College, Ambilikkai, conducted a candle-lighting ceremony for outgoing students on April 13.

Paul P. Appasamy, former Vice-Chancellor, Karunya University, Coimbatore, the chief guest, in his address, emphasised that the outgoing students should always be thankful to their parents, teachers and the college.

Nirmala Jeyaraj, secretary, offered felicitations. Jothikumar, Principal, administered a pledge to the final year students.

Annual day

Sishu Vidyalaya, CECRI Kindergarten School, Karaikudi, celebrated its 30th Annual Day recently.

A. Mala, Principal, Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology, who was the chief guest, distributed prizes to children for academic proficiency.

Vijayamohanan K. Pillai, Director, CECRI, delivered the presidential address. C. Brahadha of U.K.G. welcomed the gathering. S. Thilagavathy, Principal, presented the annual report. A variety of cultural programmes was presented by students.

D. Kalyani proposed a vote of thanks.

Visit to a bank

Students of Chairman Manickavasagam Middle School were exposed to banking operations in a visit to the Devakottai branch of the State Bank of India.

The students were taken around all sections of the bank branch and briefed about the services offered, including the loans on offer.

The also had a hands-on experience of the working of an automated teller machine.
