Former Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan has urged the State government to name the Radhapuram bus stand after former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj.

Mr. Elangovan was here on Friday to visit Congress cadre Sudalaimuthu, who was on fast demanding naming of the bus stand after Kamaraj and installation of statues of Kamaraj and his Cabinet colleague P. Kakkan on the premises. He ended the fast after Mr. Elangovan visited him at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

Speaking to reporters at the hospital, Mr. Elangovan, who said that he had met Mr. Sudalaimuthu on the instructions of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, said neither he nor his party was against the installation of other statues (of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s parents Muthuvel and Anjugam Ammal).

On Congress MLA S. Peter Alphonse participating in the function held at Radhapuram recently to mark the inauguration of the bus stand, Mr. Elangovan said he was demanding the installation of the leaders of Congress as he was a true follower of Mr. Kamaraj.

“I urged Mr. Sudalaimuthu to give up his protest as he should see the revival of ‘Kamaraj rule’ in Tamil Nadu. However, our stand on this particular issue will not affect the party’s ties with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam,” he said.
