Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday contended that someone cannot be held guilty just because their name was written on a piece of paper, and that the Supreme Court too had ruled in the same manner.

He was responding to a question by Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin in the Legislative Assembly, who sought to know what had been happening in the State since the Election Commission and the Income Tax department filed cases against AIADMK Ministers, while the Governor too had sought details about it.

“The case has details on what the Income Tax department has seized. You cannot prove guilt because someone’s name is on a paper. It can be done with anyone. For instance, if a partyman’s name is written on a paper, and police search for it and conclude that person as guilty, how can that be accepted?” Mr. Palaniswami asked.

“This is what the Supreme Court too has said: that you cannot show such a document as proof of guilt,” he contended.
