Senior advocate Nalini Chidambaram, wife of Congress leader P. Chidambaram, on Thursday moved an appeal in the Madras High Court against a single bench’s refusal to quash an Enforcement Directorate summons against her.
Ms. Chidambaram’s appeal is against an order by Justice S.M. Subramaniam wherein he allowed a summons by the ED, seeking her personal appearance, to stand.
The ED wants to question Ms. Chidambaram on the legal fees she received from Saradha Realty, which was linked to the Saradha chit fund scam.
The vacation bench of Justice V. Bharathidasan and Justice N. Seshasayee stated that it was not inclined to hear the appeal. It agreed to do so on Friday, if time permits, only after being persuaded by senior counsel Satish Parasaran.
The ED issued a fresh summons on April 30, asking Ms. Chidambaram to appear at its Kolkata office.
Mr. Parasaran informed the court that his client intended to write to the ED for an adjournment so that the matter could be heard by a regular bench.
Ms. Chidambaram contends that she cannot be asked to appear in Kolkata in view of Section 160 of the CrPC.
