Police arrested 15 members of the Naam Tamizhar Katchi when they cleared garbage in some parts of the town and tried to dump it in front of the Municipality Office here on Monday.

Led by Venkula Raju, an office-bearer of the party, the volunteers staged the protest, stating that garbage had piled up in many areas for several days due to shortage or absence of sanitary workers. Mr. Raju said as the municipality failed to take action despite repeated pleas, the party cadres cleared the garbage in Sethupathy Nagar, Anna Nagar and Roman Church areas. All the arrested were released in the evening, police said.

Stating that sanitary workers removed garbage in the municipal limits on a regular basis, Municipal Commissioner B. Mohammed Siraj said the protest was launched with an ulterior motive. He said more than 100 sanitary workers were pressed into service every day to remove garbage.
