Muthulakshmi Reddy’s services were remembered by speakers at a function organised by Thilagavathiar Tiruvarul Adheenam to mark her 130th birth anniversary here on Thursday.
Thangam Moorthy, an educationist, said that Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy had struggled hard in achieving the desired goals.
At a time when colleges, politics and social institutions remained male-dominated zones, Dr. Reddy fought all alone in the cause of women’s rights.
D. Jayanthi, Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, referred to Dr. Reddy’s efforts in tabling and moving the “Devadasi Abolition Act” in the temples under the jurisdiction of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
S.V.S. Jayakumar, an industrialist, said that Dr. Reddy was a multi-faceted personality and appealed to the youths to emulate her example for achieving greater goals in their career.
Dayananda Chandraseakara Swamigal, head of Adheenam, in his address, said the anniversary aimed at sensitising the present-day youth to the sacrifices and struggles of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy.
Later, Ms. Jayanthi gave away sewing machines to women from poor families.
