The district police made a breakthrough in the Muthoot company heist case by arresting six persons on Tuesday and recovering all 1,381 sovereigns of jewellery as well as Rs. 45,000 out of the Rs. 2.5 lakh looted from the company.

However, three other accused, including the mastermind behind the dacoity, managed to give a slip to the police.

The arrested were Sheik Abdullah (28), N. Gunasekaran (38), and D. Karthik (27), D. Suresh (27), G. Kumar (28) and S. Manikantan (29).

Inspector General of Police (West Zone) K. Vanniaperumal said that T. Venketesan, who is the mastermind behind the operations and a former employee of the Muthoot Mini Financiers (P) Limited, and Manikantan, who was arrested, were classmates while pursuing a diploma course in Pudukottai.

“Venkatesan, who wanted to become rich, persuaded Manikantan and then grouped some of their respective friends to loot the company,” he added.
