Salethil Thiruvaiyaru-2016 festival under way in the city

The week-long ‘Salethil Thiruvaiyaru-2016 music festival’, conducted as part of 169th Sadguru Tyagaraja Aaradhana celebrations, began at Dr. C. Vijayaragavachariar Hall in the city on Sunday evening.

Noted vocalist O. S. Thiagarajan inaugurated the festival, which is being organised by the Salem Sangeetha Vidhwath Sabha.

Mr. Thiagarajan advocated the cause of the Sabha and the responsibility of children and music lovers to attend all sangeeth sathsangs. He volunteered to conduct classes in advanced learning, including seminars and workshops in music, free of cost in Salem.

The Sabha in association with KTC Trust for CES Support, Chennai, had conducted music competitions for students. About 150 children participated in vocals, veena, violin, nagaswaram, percussions and mridangam competitons. Mr. Thiagarajan gave away prizes to the winners of these competitions. Suganthi Sudarsanam of AVR Swarna Mahal offered felicitations. J. Srinivasan, secretary of the Sabha, spoke. Concerts by renowned musicians will be held daily in the evenings till May 27. The pancharathna keerthanas of Sadguru Tyagaraja will be rendered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 27.
