The police have picked up a man who is suspected to have murdered his 38-year-old wife and set her ablaze here last week.
On May 17, a charred body of an unidentified woman was found near the bridge in Redipatti. A suitcase that was found near the body was also completely destroyed.
The police registered a case and the body was taken to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital.
The deceased was later identified as Sumathi, wife of Nagendran alias Rajini of Gandhi Nagar in Solampallam. Inquiries revealed that they are rag-pickers and have four daughters. While one daughter is married, two daughters were working in Bengaluru and the other one is with them. Since they do not own a house, they used to sleep in pavements and along the roads in residential areas.
It is said that Sumathi had an illicit relationship with her relative that led to dispute between the couple. On the fateful day, Nagendran murdered her and packed the body in a gunny bag. Later, he took it to the crime spot and set it on fire. The suitcase in which she had dress materials was also set on fire. He is being questioned and the police said that he had confessed to the crime.
