Kerala Congress (M) has decided to launch an agitation seeking immediate intervention of the Central government in the Mullaperiyar issue to ensure the ‘security of 35 lakh people whose life and property are at stake in case of a calamity.'

According to party general secretary Joy Abraham, the party will organise dharnas in five central Kerala districts which are in the grip of a scare on account of the changed situation following the recent series of earthquakes in Idukki and the rising level of water in the Periyar reservoir. The day-long dharnas in Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Alappuzha districts would in front of Central government offices while the one at Kottayam would be at Gandhi Square, he said here on Sunday.

Alert in Idukki district

Thiruvananthapuram special correspondent reports:

With the level in the Mullaperiyar reservoir touching the spillway level of the dam with heavy rain in the river basin during the past two days, the Idukki district administration has issued an alert to people living downstream of the reservoir on Sunday, and is making preparation for evacuation if necessary. It, however, said there was no reason for panic and opened control rooms to monitor the situation and assist people in case of emergency. A team of scientists are in Muallperiyar area ascertaining the impact of the recent tremors. More than two dozen tremors had occurred in Idukki district since July this year.
