In a move towards making the State free from open defecation, a total of 83,786 toilets will be constructed during 2015-2016 in Vellore district.
The State government had announced that 15 lakh individual household toilets will be constructed during this year in the State.
Accordingly, 47,313 toilets will be built under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and 36,473 toilets under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in Vellore district. Eligible beneficiaries will receive a subsidy of Rs. 12,000, a press release said.
It has been decided to involve the village poverty reduction committees / panchayat-level federation of self help groups at each village panchayat to take up works to ensure that individual household toilets are built and people used the facility in rural areas. These organisations will receive an incentive of Rs. 300 per individual household toilet .
Applications will be available free of cost at the village panchayat offices, block development offices, District Rural Development Agency and office of the district Collectorate.
The scheme will be implemented by village panchayats. Construction should be completed within three months from the time the panchayat president receives the work order.
The subsidy of Rs. 12,000 will be given in two instalments. The first will be released after the foundation is laid, and the second after completion of construction.
Service organisations, panchayats, field staff who implement the scheme well will receive awards, the release added.
