Arputhammal, mother of Perarivalan, a convict facing the death sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has sought his immediate release.

Reacting to the former CBI official, V. Thiagarajan’s comments in a documentary that he had not recorded verbatim the confessional statement of Perarivalan, she said: “The judgment was based on this erroneous confession. I have been reiterating for years that my son has nothing to do with the assassination…I am happy that the truth has come out.”

Ms. Arputhammal appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to intervene and do him justice. Since a crucial point was not recorded in the confessional statement, the conviction became legally untenable.
