A vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance is a vote for progress, said Premalatha, wife of actor Vijayakant, founder-president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).

There is an urgent need for a change in the country and in Tamil Nadu for ushering in a new era and the voters could bring about this by electing Narendra Modi as Prime Minister, she said.

Ms. Premalatha was addressing a series of roadside meetings here while canvassing on Wednesday for A.M.G. Vijayakumar, DMDK candidate for Tiruchi Lok Sabha constituency.

The 10-year United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule had failed the people on all fronts with the country not making any progress in any field. She assured the gathering that the BJP-led regime at the Centre will accord priority for eliminating corruption, controlling prices, ensuring linking of major rivers, and creating employment opportunities for the youth. For Tamil Nadu, priority would be accorded to ensure adequate power supply, Ms. Premalatha said.

Launching a scathing attack on both the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, she said both the parties had betrayed the people of the State on all fronts and had ‘ruined’ it for many years.

If the people continued to support the two parties unmindful of the sufferings they underwent, the State would continue to languish, she warned. “Don’t put the interest of the State in the hands of these Dravidian parties ever in the future. If you commit this blunder, the State will not achieve any progress even after 300 years”, she said.

The AIADMK regime could not ensure water in the Cauvery, the lifeline of delta region. Neither could it check illegal sand mining. Urging the people not to encourage “cash for vote” culture, she said that people should not pledge their interests and that of the country for the next five years for a mere Rs. 500. Ms. Premalatha addressed well-attended roadside meetings at Pettavaithalai, Srirangam, Woraiyur, Kattur and Melakalkandarkottai.
