Nearly 200 people were taken into custody on Monday in seven places across Chennai for staging protests against the police action on the activists opposed to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. They were let off later in the day.

Thirumurugan, coordinator of the ‘May 17 Movement,’ was arrested as he was about to join a group of students from Government Arts Collenge, Nandanam, who were also staging a protest.

Nearly 100 members of the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi staged a road roko outside the collector’s office against the treatment meted out to the anti-KKNPP protestors on Monday. As the protest intensified in Kudankulam, the members of the party condemned the police action and protested in the road.

“Hundreds of people including elderly people, women and children have been affected in the violence though they protested in a peaceful manner. Even journalists have been attacked. We condemn the atrocities of the police in Kudankulam,” said State general secretary of the party Thamim Ansari.

Due to the road roko, traffic was disrupted outside Collector’s office in Rajaji Salai for a while.
