Schools and colleges in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry were closed on Tuesday following the demonstration by the MLAs along with others demanding the Puducherry Government to restore the 18 per cent reservation provided to Karaikal region in the medical college in Puducherry.
A.M.H.Nazeem, MLA of Karaikal and Leader of the Opposition in the Puducherry Assembly along with three other MLAs-V.K.Ganapathy (Congress), P.R.Siva (MDMK) and M.V.Omalingam (AIADMK) staged demonstration in front of several schools and colleges here to close down the institutions to press their demand to restore the reservation in medical college seats. Students did not attend the classes and all educational institutions were closed. V.M.C.Sivakumar (DMK) and A.Marimuthu (Independent), the two other MLAs of Karaikal have also supported the cause.
Police sources told The Hindu that no untoward incident was reported and the demonstrations went on peacefully.
