Ariyalur Congress MLA Palai Amaramurthy's nephew P. Durai alias Dharmadurai (14) was rescued by the Kiliyanur police from his abductors near here on Monday. The kidnappers demanded Rs. 50 lakh for his release.

The police have secured S. Madharsha (22) of Om Sakthi Nagar in Ramanathapuram and seized the car which was used for the abduction.

However S. Manikandan (28) of Andimadam, who was earlier a car driver to the MLA and was the brain behind the act, escaped.

Dharmadurai, son of Palanisamy (younger brother of the MLA), was studying in Class IX in a private school in Keezhapazhuvur.

As usual on Friday evening, Dharmadurai took a bus to his home after school. As soon as he got down from the bus some unidentified persons whisked him away in a car.

Since the boy did not return home, Mr. Palanisamy lodged a complaint with the Thirumanur police at Ariyalur.

Meanwhile, an anonymous caller had rung up the MLA asking for the ransom to be delivered at a designated place at a specified time. However, the caller did not turn up.

Some passersby noticed an Innova car parked near a shop at Kiliyanur in Villupuram district on Monday morning. They also saw a boy, with his hands tied, desperately tapping on the windscreen, and a person inside the vehicle trying to gag him.

On information, the Kiliyanur police rushed to the spot and took Madharsha into custody.

However, Manikandan managed to escape from the police. Later, the police handed over the boy to the MLA and his parents.
