Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday gave approval for one-time purchase of personal computers or laptops with internet connection and printers for all MLAs from their constituency development fund.

A State government press release said the MLAs could buy either a personal computer or a laptop from the “unspecified funds” of Rs 87.50 lakh of the total constituency development fund of Rs 2 crore for the year 2011-12.

Ms Jayalalithaa increased the MLAs' constituency development fund to Rs 2 core during the debate on the revised budget estimate in 2011-12. She also announced that MLAs could purchase computers.

“This measure would prepare the MLAs for an effective participation in the Assembly debates,” the State government said.

The Assembly session is slated to begin on Monday with the customary address by the Governor.

This will be followed by a discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address over the next few days.
