MLA urges arts college to admit more students

August 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:54 am IST - Tiruvannamalai:

Former Minister and Tiruvannamalai MLA E.V. Velu has demanded Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai to admit more students as permitted by the Tamil Nadu Government in its order issued on July 11.

In the letter to the college principal M. Chinnaiah he has referred to the Government Order number 86 of Higher Education Department that was issued on July 11. It had permitted the government arts and science colleges in the State to admit up to 60 additional students in science courses and up to 100 in arts courses according to the available lab facilities for 2016-17 academic year.

The order also asked the concerned colleges to get permission from the universities for the intended increase in number of seats. Mr. Velu said 7,000 students had applied for different courses this year.

But only 1,200 will get a chance to join the college. Hence he demanded the college to augment the intake of students this year to the maximum number as permitted by the government.

Increasing intake

According to college sources, the college council decided to enhance the intake by 10 per cent in science courses and 20 per cent in arts courses considering the paucity of infrastructure viz. class rooms, lab, lavatories etc.

This policy decision roughly translates into 10 additional seats in each science course and 20 additional seats in each arts course in real terms.

E.V. Velu referred to a Higher Education Department G.O. issued on July 11 to press his case
