The investigation into the audiotape scandal involving assistant professor Nirmala Devi “luring” college girls to fulfil sexual favours of higher officials gained momentum on Monday, after V. Murugan, an assistant professor of the Madurai Kamaraj University, who was said to be absconding, appeared before officials of the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) here.
The CB-CID was on the lookout for Mr. Murugan and Karuppasamy, a former research scholar, to zero-in on the “higher officials” of the university who allegedly sought sexual favours from college girls.
Sources said Mr. Murugan, of Virudhunagar district, was known to Ms. Devi during her college days. Ms. Devi renewed her friendship with Mr. Murugan when she went to the university for paper valuation. She was introduced to Mr. Karuppasamy through Mr. Murugan.
The police began looking for Mr. Murugan following Ms. Devi’s reported confession to the Virudhunagar district police and the CB-CID that he had a role in forcing her to make “desperate invitations” to the girls for “an urgent assignment” for the higher officials, in return for academic progression and financial gain.
