An engine fire in Tiruchendur–Tirunelveli passenger (56035) resulted in detention of the train on Friday.

Smoke, caused by a minor fire, emanated from the dynamic breaking grid in the engine. The driver, Paul Devadoss, on noticing the smoke, put out the fire with the aid of an extinguisher immediately, railway sources told The Hindu .

Electrical short circuit is said to be the cause of the fire. The train departed from Tiruchendur at 10.25 a.m. and the driver noticed the smoke near Veerapandianpattinam railway gate, which is two kilometres away. However, the fire did not cause any damage to the engine.

Following the mishap, the train returned to Tiruchendur at 10.40 a.m. , where a thorough check-up was done by a team of technical experts.

After a delay of 90 minutes, the train left for Tirunelveli at 11.55 a.m. .
