The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the territorial administration on the controversial medical college project given to the South Education Trust linked to Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh. The Ministry has sought particulars with regard to the project, for which the territorial administration gave in-principle approval and the essentiality certificate.
Sources in the government told The Hindu that the Ministry had sought a report from the Chief Secretary seeking identity of members involved in the Trust and the date of its registration. It also sought to know whether any government land was given to the Trust for starting the medical college at Karaikal.
When contacted, Chief Secretary R. Chandramohan said, “A report on the project was sought by the Ministry sometime last week. I have already furnished the details.”
However, when brought to his notice about reports stating that the Ministry had directed the administration to withdraw the no-objection certificate given to the Trust, he said, “I have not received any communication regarding this.”
The government decision to give no-objection certificate to the Trust for establishing the project had already generated controversy with the Left parties and the AIADMK demanding a thorough probe into the alleged violations in sanctioning the project.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) had, in its representation to President of India, seeking recall of Mr. Singh in the wake of his alleged links with stud farm owner Hasan Ali Khan
The party also highlighted “misuse of official position” in getting sanctioned the medical college project.
