A remark by Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday on the final phase of the civil war in Sri Lanka evoked strong reactions from the DMK.

After Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin listed a number of projects that his party, while sharing power at the Centre, had secured for the benefit of the State, Mr. Jayakumar said the Opposition party could also mention the death of a large number of people in the last phase of the civil war as its “achievement.”

Immediately, Mr. Stalin and his colleagues got up from their seats and protested strongly. Mr. Stalin said it was the ruling party which had spoken against V. Prabhakaran, leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). P. Thangamani, Electricity Minister, said Jayalalithaa was against terrorism.
