State Ministers led hundreds of people in paying homage to freedom fighters Maruthu Pandiyar brothers – Periya Maruthu and Chinna Maruthu – at their memorial at Tirupattur in the district on the occasion of their 216th death anniversary on Tuesday.

Ministers Sellur K. Raju (Cooperation), O.S. Manian (Handlooms and Textiles), R.B. Udhayakumar (Revenue), G. Baskaran (Khadi and Village Industries Board) and M. Manikandan (Information Technology) paid homage, followed by people from all walks of life.

Accompanied by Collector G. Latha and local MP P.R. Senthilnathan, the Ministers paid floral tributes to the warriors by garlanding their statues at the memorial on behalf of the State government.

Later, the Ministers, Collector and a large number of people paid floral tributes to the freedom fighters at the memorial pillar erected near Tirupattur bus stand. Maruthu brothers, who revolved against the British, were hanged in a tamarind tree at this place by the Colonial rulers.

Devakottai Sub-Collector Asha Ajit, Superintendent of Police T. Jayachandran, District Revenue Officer T. Ilango, revenue officials and the public also paid their respects to Maruthu brothers at the memorial pillar.

The district administration and the police have made tight security arrangements for the ‘guru puja’ of Maruthu brothers, scheduled to be organised at their samadhi at Kalayarkoil on October 27.
