Minister inspects desilting work

“Works totalling Rs. 6.05 crore would be completed for the benefit of delta farmers”

The State Government has ordered desilting of irrigation and drainage channels in Tiruvarur district to ensure that all tail-end areas get water.

Desilting and masonry works worth Rs. 6.05 crore were under way in major channels, Food Minister R. Kamaraj said on Saturday.

Speaking after inspecting desilting work at Haridwaramangalam near Valangaiman, he said that in the Thanjavur Circle Vennar Basin Division a total of 46 desilting works covering a distance of 162.35 km and worth Rs. 1.59 crore were being undertaken during the current year.

Masonry works

In the same division, 29 masonry works worth Rs. 1.38 crore were being carried out.

In Tiruvarur Circle Vennar Division, 30 desilting works worth Rs. 71.50 lakh and 44 masonry works costing Rs. 1.48 crore as also three shutter repair works at a cost of Rs. 6 lakh were being carried out during the same period.

The Minister added that in the Cauvery Basin Division, 16 desilting works at a cost of Rs. 61 lakh, four masonry works costing Rs. 17.11 lakh and one regulator repair work at a cost of Rs. 3.70 lakh were being undertaken during the current year.

In Tiruvarur district, desilting, masonry and shutter repair works totalling Rs. 6.05 crore would be completed for the benefit of the delta farmers, he said.

In particular, desilting works being carried out in the Haridwaramangalam Channel would benefit farmers of 3,144 acres spread over Irukarai, Avalivanallur, Kumaramangalam, Haridwaramangalam, Ketthanur and Perungudi villages, he noted.

District Revenue Officer T. Mohanraj, PWD Executive Engineer, Vennar Basin Division, Thanjavur, Ilango, Nidamangalam Assistant Engineer Mohan, and other officials accompanied the Minister.
