School Education Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan expressed condolences on behalf of his department to Anitha’s family.
“I am upset by what has happened. We not only condole with the family but I want to tell students that this government will make all efforts to protect its students and their interests. We will ensure that in the future, students won’t have to fear taking competitive exams. We don’t want students to take such extreme steps. You know the government has been continuously putting pressure on the Central government to exempt the State from NEET,” he told reporters.
‘Tried all options’
Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan said, “We empathise with the family of Anitha. We had exhausted the legal and legislative options we had. Despite our best efforts, the Supreme Court ruled against our appeal. We had no alternative but to respect the constitutional democracy...Students should not lose heart. We urge the parents and the students to take advantage of the psychiatric counselling that the State government offers in all the 32 districts.”
Celebrities react
Condoling the death of Anitha, actor Kamal Haasan said, “Looking at how much she has scored, I feel like a good doctor has passed away....Those who were supposed to argue this before the court are engaged in horse trading now. Let them learn a lesson from this incident. If they don’t, we don’t need them. We will teach them a lesson,”
Actor Rajinikanth tweeted: “My heart goes out to all the pain and agony she would have undergone before taking this drastic step. My condolences to her family.”
