The distribution of financial support to 115 college and school students marked the 95th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister and founder of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)M.G. Ramachandran on Tuesday in the State.
At the AIADMK headquarters here, Chief Minister and the party general secretary Jayalalithaa gave away a total sum of about Rs. 45.6 lakh to 111 college students and four school students. Of the college students, 41 were studying in the first year of their courses; 33 students - second year; 21 students - third year and 16 students - final year. The assistance was given on behalf of the Perarignar Anna Trust and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Trust.
A release issued by the party stated that so far, Ms Jayalalithaa gave about Rs. 4.17 crore to 1,029 students belonging to the economically-weaker sections of society towards financial support of the students' education.
On the occasion, She also presented a sum of Rs. 1 lakh to Jayanthi, widow of Vasudevan who was a member of the party wing for the un-organised sector workers and who was covered under an accident insurance policy scheme.
Earlier, Ms Jayalalithaa, through video-conferencing, unveiled the bronze statues of MGR and former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai installed near the Kallakurichi bus terminus in Villupuram district. Among those who attended the function were School Education Minister and the party district secretary for the Villupuram (north) unit C.Ve. Shanmugam (who was at the party office) and Assembly Whip and the district secretary for Villupuram (south) P. Mohan (at Kallakurichi).
As soon as she entered the party office, she garlanded the statue of the founder and distributed sweets to other leaders. She handed over the first copy of the birth anniversary souvenir to K.K. Kalaimani, secretary of the party wing for fishermen.
