The State government should deny permission for extraction of Methane from Cauvery delta districts as it would result in pollution and overexploitation of groundwater, said U. Vasuki, secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), here on Sunday.

She told presspersons that a private company, which signed an MoU with the State government, is said to have begun work without getting the nod of the Pollution Control Board.

Water scarcity

When the State was facing water scarcity, the project that threatened the groundwater exploitation should not be allowed, she said. As regards Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, she said women should not be burdened with hard work. They should be given full wages under the scheme. Wages should be increased to Rs. 250 per day.

Ms. Vasuki said the public distribution system in the country should cover at least 90 per cent of the people.
