Superintendent of Police N. M Mylvahanan has emphasised the need for closer rapport between the police and the general public for better maintenance of law and order.

Addressing after distributing prizes to the winners of police-public sports meet at the AR grounds here on Saturday, he said the meet was organised every year to bring about better understanding between the men in uniform and the general public with the focus on maintaining law and order.

The meet was organised every year with separate fund and this year, track events and field events such as volley ball, kabaddi and cricket were conducted, the SP said.

The police-public meet was organised mainly to bring about better understanding between the two and convey the message that public also had the responsibility to help the police maintain law and order and ensure peace and harmony, he said.

The relationship between the public and police was good in the district if the response to ‘Hello Police,’ a public information system, launched last month, was any indication, he added.

The 24x7 system was launched for the general public to alert the police on anti-social and illegal activities. The public could call the Common Access Number (CAN) 83000 31100 to pass on information to the police or their smart phones with ‘WhatsApp’ application to send audio and video clippings.

The system received an average of 45 calls a day and had received 1,000 calls in one month, Mr. Mylvahanan said adding this was evident as people were willing to share information with the police and actively cooperate in maintaining law and order, he said.

He said policemen were government servants in uniform and there was no need for the public to maintain distance from them.

“Like Police, the general public too have responsibility towards maintaining law and order,” the SP added.

Overwhelming response

The sports meet was held in all the seven police sub-divisions in the district and it received an overwhelming response from the public.
